Jonathan Adler featured in BBC investigation into hair strand testing in the Family Court

Jonathan Adler has been featured in a BBC investigation examining concerns surrounding the interpretation of hair strand testing evidence in Family Court proceedings.

The article explores the growing scrutiny around the use and interpretation of hair strand drug testing in care proceedings, and the potentially life-changing consequences these results can have for families.

Jonathan acted for a mother in proceedings where hair strand testing evidence was challenged alongside other evidence before the court. During cross-examination of an expert witness, Jonathan raised alternative explanations for the reported findings, including the potential impact of hair straighteners on the movement of ketamine traces within the hair sample.

The expert accepted that these factors could affect interpretation and conceded that the mother’s account was, on the balance of probabilities, truthful. The local authority subsequently agreed that the child could return home.
