Budhpura 20 years: The Case for Sustainable Mining exposes the generational impact of the hazardous working conditions that endure across the sandstone industry, which have produced “widow villages” populated by those who have lost family members to silicosis epidemic amongst workers. It charts the rise and fall of voluntary guidelines that have failed to secure safe and dignified working conditions and makes the case for moving away from a business-as-usual approach to the production and importation of sandstone products. New mechanisms, such as the Mine Workers Welfare Board in Rajasthan, mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence in India as well as states trading with India and a new initiative for importers to enhance transparency and due diligence in supply chains can bring change, and improve outcomes for future generations of workers.
