Joseph Maggs will be chairing “Defending Rights, Building Power: Lawyers, campaigners, and the fight for migrant justice”, an event organised by the Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers.
This public meeting will look at the practical relationship between those in the legal profession and grassroots campaigners, and explore what lawyers can contribute to migrants rights organising.
What are the main changes proposed and coming into force? What should lawyers and campaigners be preparing for? Are there forms of legal support that can be useful to grassroots organisers, beyond day-to-day asylum casework (i.e. monitoring, supporting protest rights, strategic litigation)? How can communities respond to intimidation and forms of far-right organising in their communities? What forms of solidarity are useful to migrant communities? What role can those in the legal profession play in the movement for migrants rights?
On the panel will be Zehrah Hasan (Garden Court Chambers), Griff Ferris (Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants), Francesca Parkes (Refugee Legal Support), Rex (Captain Support UK) and Tigs Louis-Puttick (Bail for Immigration Detainees).
