Human Rights
Ajanta is the recipient of the Liberty and JUSTICE Peter Duffy Award for Human Rights 2008, “…for her remarkable efforts to promote and protect human rights on a pro bono basis and in particular her exceptional work in support of freedom of expression.”
European Court of Human Rights Litigation
Ajanta has developed a practice in human rights litigation and in an advisory capacity over the last decade. She has been instructed or assisted in a multitude of cases before the European Court of Human Rights concerning many of the principle Articles of the Convention and its related Protocols, representing petitioners against the governments of Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom.
Other Human Rights litigation
She has researched and drafted a number of complaints to UN Human Rights Committees and utilized the UN Special Rapporteur procedures in relation to individual petitioners in other jurisdictions, principally concerning CAT and the ICCPR. She has been involved in cases litigated before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and before the African Commission on Human Rights. She has also drafted a number of amicus briefs assisting regional human rights tribunals on behalf of NGOs.
Human rights training
Ajanta has conducted a number of human rights training seminars, workshops and lectures for members of the legal profession, the judiciary, organizations and students in numerous jurisdictions around the world on international human rights principles and jurisprudence, United Nations mechanisms and regional human rights mechanisms, in particular the European Convention.
Advocacy training
Ajanta is a qualified advocacy trainer for the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn and teaches advocacy on a regular basis to pupil barristers. She has also given advocacy training to lawyers in foreign jurisdictions.
Human rights monitoring
Ajanta routinely carries out research, trial observations, human rights monitoring and fact-finding missions in many foreign jurisdictions; provides advice; and writes published reports and contributions to legal articles for NGOs.
